Back before 9/11 and LBO's took the fun out of aviation, I went to an soccer tournament for airline employees just outside of Jaco Beach. I remember it being every bit as amazing (and hot) as you note here.
P.S. I did take a bus from San Jose to the coast. 1/10. Do not recommend.
